The Project

About the Project

Fleet Reflections is a project for songwriters and aspiring songwriters.

  • Open to all - no experience needed
  • Song writing workshops
  • Outdoor visits
  • Mentoring

Using the Fleet Valley as its focus, this project is open to all who would like to take part in a songwriting project.  Both experienced songwriters and those who have never tried before are welcome.

Using inspiring locations along the Fleet Valley National Scenic Area and on Cairnsmore of Fleet National Nature Reserve as its focus, Fleet Reflections gives you the opportunity to take part in a new musical project using our beautiful landscape and its stories as inspiration.

We will provide workshops, mentoring, and a closed online group for support and feedback. If you are more lyricist than musician, the project will help you collaborate with a musician.

Selected songs will be performed at Gatehouse events over the next year - Midsummer Music, Big Lit 2018, Feis Rois, The Bakehouse, Mill Sessions.

A special Mill Session will perform the songs and members of the Lost Wasp collective will assist with performance as required.  Songs will be recorded and they will be available online.

Resources and guidance is available here to help you get started and this will be added to as the project advances.

This project is for all - young or old, experienced or novice - it is supportive and friendly - join us and have a go.

How to take part

To take part you need to register with us, which can be done on the site here, by phone (01557 814099/814458) or by calling in to the Mill.  Having access to the internet would be useful though as much of the support and forum for the site is online.

The project is open to all - no experience is necessary.  Once you are registered you will be kept informed of forthcoming events and invited to join the online group.

If you are an experienced songwriter you may simply submit a song to the project.  But we would also welcome your input and support if you would like to give it.

If you are new to songwriting we hope to help you with the skills to produce or contribute to a song.  We welcome writers and poets who would contribute writing or poems to the project.  We hope that some of this might lead to useful collaborations between writers and musicians.

The objective is to celebrate our wonderful area here in and around Gatehouse - the Fleet Valley all the way from the estuary to Cairnsmore at the top of the valley.  Songs and writings should engage with the landscape or the town of Gatehouse in some way - its natural environment, the people, or its history.
